Inspired by Te Wakaminenga flag, also known as Te Kara (the colors) or He W(h)akaputanga flag, which was chosen in 1834 by 25 Northern chiefs of the United Tribes of New Zealand. This flag is the first recognized flag of Nu Tīreni (New Zealand), paving the way for 'He W(h)akaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tīreni' (The Declaration of Independence of New Zealand).

Te Wakaminenga, the Confederation of United Tribes, was a coalition of Māori chiefs who united to uphold the mana of their whenua and assert their sovereignty. Te Wakaminenga flag has long been a symbol of Unity, Tino Rangatiratanga (Sovereignty), and Mana Motuhake (Self Determination).
